At CPAC 2020, China expert Gordon Chang says it seems like the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has bought the World Health Organization (WHO). Why? Because WHO’s narrative corresponds to Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s push to get Chinese people back to work. The COVID-19 situation is proving to be much more severe than the SARS outbreak, and the Chinese economy is taking a long-term hit. To make matters worse, supply chains moved out even before the epidemic began.
In light of CPAC 2020’s “America vs. Socialism” theme, we discussed what impact the coronavirus might have on U.S.-China relations; how it will hurt the CCP’s reputation; whether China can fulfill its commitment to the phase one trade deal; and ultimately, how the epidemic has exposed weaknesses in the U.S.-China link.
